Thompson Hine LLP is pleased to announce that firm partner Donald H. Messinger and his wife Sally Messinger, a prominent Realtor with Howard Hanna, were named among the 2021 “18 Difference Makers” by Cleveland Jewish News. The award celebrates those in Northeast Ohio dedicated to making a change in the local Jewish community and beyond.

A partner in the firm's Corporate Transactions & Securities practice group, Messinger focuses his practice on matters of public and closely held businesses, mergers and acquisitions, public offerings and securities, finance, leveraged buyouts and nonprofit corporations. Professionally, he has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer,” “Best Lawyer in America,” “Best-Lawyer’s Lawyer of the Year,” and “BTI Client Service All-Star.” Messinger also has been a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and has also served as partner-in-charge of Thompson Hine’s Cleveland office, a role that included guiding philanthropic efforts.

“Don’s civic and philanthropic engagement has been broad and deep with a lifelong dedication to community service”, said Kip T. Bollin, partner in charge of Thompson Hine’s Cleveland office. “We are proud of his contributions to the Northeast Ohio community over the past 50 years and of the substantial positive impact he has made in the lives of so many people.”

The contributions Messinger has made to the community are expansive, encompassing literally decades of public service. Included below are a few highlights of his significant, long-term dedication to the community.

  • Serving as trustee for life and past president for Circle Health Services (formerly known as The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland), where he was part of the organization’s founding in 1970, providing pro bono legal services and subsequently assuming leadership roles on its board.
  • Serving as director and past president for the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC). He is in his 45th year of working with CHSC, a tenure that included two terms as board president. In fact, the CHSC created an award named for Messinger to honor his decades of service in a lasting way: The Donald H. Messinger Board Service Award is now presented annually as an enduring tribute.
  • Messinger joined the board of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in 2006 and served as board chairman from 2016 to 2019. He remains active on the board, including service on its executive committee.
  • Early in his career, Messinger drafted governance documents for a new organization, which we know now as the United Way of Greater Cleveland, and the Messingers remain committed supporters of the volunteers for United Way and the agencies it supports.
  • Messinger was involved as a committee member, board member and board chair in multiple iterations of what is now called Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU). As a member of a task force that created BVU, he served as an officer and board member of BVU for over 20 years. From its earliest days as “Community Volunteer Services” to today’s BVU, the organization has garnered national recognition for its ability to meaningfully connect thousands of business professionals in Cleveland and Akron with nonprofit boards while helping nonprofits and companies to work together in strengthening the Northeast Ohio community.
