On July 1, 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  This trilateral free trade agreement will affect many facets of the North American economy. Please join us weekly for our four-part virtual roundtable series as we help you navigate the USMCA provisions affecting companies and understand the rights and obligations of the member countries. Our discussions will include counsel from law firms in the United States, Mexico and Canada and representatives from companies addressing these issues firsthand.

Session 1 – Labor & Environmental Protections

The USMCA’s labor chapter focuses on improvements in Mexican labor laws and provides a “rapid response mechanism” to enforce and maintain these changes. The chapter includes a labor value content rule requiring that a certain percentage of auto content be made by workers earning at least US$16 per hour. The USMCA’s environmental chapter covers such issues as trafficking in wildlife, timber and fish, air quality and marine litter but is noticeably silent on most climate change issues. Our panelists will discuss these revisions and answer audience questions on these and other USMCA labor and environmental topics.
