Stand Against Injustice

The following is a message from Thompson Hine's Managing Partner.

Thompson Hine stands against injustice emanating from hatred, racism, and bigotry. We have seen examples of this injustice most recently in the senseless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor. We recognize these, along with other injustices faced by Black Americans and other communities of color, and we are compelled to take meaningful action.

Our Firm has long demonstrated a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, but we appreciate that, in this moment, we must do more. To that end, Thompson Hine has committed to making a positive impact, internally and externally, by focusing on three key priorities: (i) support for our employees, (ii) education to increase our collective understanding of the underpinnings of racism and social justice issues with the goal of moving our Firm forward, and (iii) community engagement to support social justice. The Firm is taking the following actions, some of which are already underway:

  • Support – We want our employees to have safe spaces to communicate about issues related to injustice, racism, and discrimination. We have created a series of small group meetings, including some with engaged experts, to support our lawyers and staff. Over the past 10 days, we have conducted several discussions with our Black lawyers or staff to provide them with an opportunity to speak openly about their thoughts on these important issues. This week, Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett will facilitate a conversation with our Black lawyers and staff focused on strategies for coping with the impact of racism, trauma, stress, and anxiety.
  • Education – We are committed to increasing awareness and understanding regarding the complexities of the social justice issues that are core to the current protests and ways that allies can engage positively to help address these issues. To that end, the Firm is launching a multi-series social justice curriculum featuring topics including racial Injustice, discriminatory policing, and allyship. To have the Firm benefit fully from this program, we strongly encourage all lawyers and staff to participate in these sessions.
  • Community Engagement
    • Charitable Donations – The Firm will match up to $25,000 of donations made by our lawyers and staff to identified social justice organizations. Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion leadership is working with our local office Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committees and Partners in Charge to identify appropriate recipients of our contributions in each of our markets. Details about the method for making contributions will be forthcoming
      .
    • TH Social Justice Fellowship – The Firm plans to launch the TH Social Justice Fellowship, which will allow up to five of the Firm’s lawyers to participate in secondments with civil rights and social justice organizations for up to six months, with compensation and benefits paid by the Firm during the fellowship
      .
    • Pro Bono – Our Pro Bono Committee is working to identify opportunities to provide pro bono support to organizations that are committed to anti-racism efforts and will place a priority on assistance to anti-racism and social justice projects.

As members of the legal community, we have a heavy responsibility to work to ensure that everyone is afforded equal justice, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Thank you, in advance, for your participation in these important programs.
